Mappa Puffer
Mappa Puffer (Arothron mappa)
The Scribbled Arothron Puffer, also known as the Scribbled Toadfish or Map Puffer, is renowned for its striking and vibrant appearance. Its coloration ranges from light tan to dark yellow, adorned with a network of black “scribbles” that create a complex pattern across its body. Although it lacks pelvic fins, it adeptly uses its pectoral fins to navigate its aquarium environment.
When threatened or alarmed, the Scribbled Arothron Puffer can inflate its body to nearly twice its normal size to deter potential predators. Its flesh contains toxins that are harmful if ingested, and its teeth are fused into a beak-like structure.
For optimal care, a fish-only aquarium of 300 gallons or more with a high-quality protein skimmer is recommended. This puffer generally coexists peacefully with other fish, including other puffers, but may consume invertebrates, corals, and even aquarium equipment found in a reef tank. To avoid stress during handling, use a container for transfers rather than a net, as it can become agitated.
The Scribbled Arothron Puffer requires a varied diet of meaty foods, such as squid, krill, clams, and hard-shelled shrimp, to help manage its continuously growing teeth.
