African Cleaner Wrasse (Labroides dimidiatus)
The Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse is a fascinating fish that can be found singly, in pairs, or in small groups. Known for its symbiotic relationships, this species sets up “cleaning stations” to remove parasites from other fish. It attracts clients by performing a calming up-and-down tail movement and is even known to clean the mouths and gills of larger fish. Sourced in small numbers from the Western Indian Ocean, the African and Maldivian Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse can thrive in home aquariums, but it requires advanced care. This species is best suited for experienced marine aquarists. They need ample swimming space, as they are very active, and should be kept with fish of different shapes and colors. A secure lid or canopy is essential, as these fish can jump from open tanks or uncovered overflow boxes. Feeding the Bluestreak Cleaner Wrasse involves providing small quantities of fresh, meaty food multiple times a day, as they can’t consume large meals at once. Ideal offerings include small pieces of vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other small meaty foods. Once acclimated, they can also accept high-quality marine flakes and tiny pellets to complement their diet.
