Blue Face Angel (Pomacanthus xanthometopon)

The Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon), also known as the Yellowmask or Yellowface Angelfish, is a striking species with a dramatic transformation as it matures. Juvenile Blueface Angelfish are characterized by alternating vertical stripes of black, white, and sapphire blue. As they mature and reach about five inches in length, they begin to change into their adult coloration. Adults are mostly pale yellow with bluish scales, and they have a bright-yellow pectoral fin. Their face is a mottled blue, with a yellow “mask” extending from eye to eye. An eyespot is also located at the caudal end of the dorsal fin.

These fish require a large tank of at least 220 gallons, with plenty of hiding spots and live rock for grazing. While they are not ideal for reef tanks due to their tendency to nip at stony and soft corals, as well as clam mantles, they thrive in well-maintained, spacious aquariums. It’s important to note that they can be territorial, especially when they are the largest fish in the tank, so it’s generally best to keep them as the sole angelfish in a setup.

In terms of diet, Blueface Angelfish need a varied and high-quality diet. They should be fed at least three times daily, with foods such as Spirulina, marine algae, high-quality angelfish preparations, mysis shrimp, and other meaty foods to ensure they stay healthy and vibrant.
