Yellow Tang
Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens)
The Yellow Hawaiian Tang is often considered the quintessential fish for home saltwater aquariums. With its vibrant yellow, oval-shaped body, the Yellow Tang adds a bright splash of color to any marine setup. This active swimmer glides gracefully through the tank, serving as a lively “tour guide” for anyone watching. While it is iconic to the reefs of Hawaii, the Yellow Hawaiian Tang actually inhabits a broad range of the Pacific Ocean, extending as far as Indonesia and the Great Barrier Reef. Also known as the Yellow Sailfin Tang or Yellow Surgeonfish, this species thrives best in aquariums of at least 100 gallons to provide ample swimming space. Like other Tangs, it can be territorial, especially towards its own kind, so it’s advisable to keep only one per tank unless introducing multiple individuals at the same time. Though the Yellow Hawaiian Tang enjoys meaty foods alongside other fish, it’s crucial to provide plenty of marine-based seaweed and algae. This diet supports its immune system, reduces aggression, and promotes overall health.
