Mimic (Chocolate) Tang
Mimic (Chocolate) Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus)
The Mimic Lemon Peel Tang, also known as the Mimic Surgeon or Chocolate Surgeonfish, features a striking yellow body when young, accented with blue highlights around the eyes and gill covers, resembling the Lemonpeel Angelfish. As it matures, its color transitions to a tan with red highlights around the eyes and pectoral fins. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins develop green hues while maintaining tan tips.
A 125-gallon or larger aquarium with ample live rock is essential to provide sufficient swimming space and territorial areas. The Mimic Lemon Peel Tang can be aggressive towards other Tangs and Surgeonfish but generally coexists peacefully with other fish.
While this Tang will accept meaty foods, a diet rich in marine-based seaweed and algae is crucial for its health. This diet helps strengthen the immune system, reduces aggression, and improves overall well-being. Provide dried seaweed tied to a rock or use a veggie clip, and feed at least three times a week. Products like Sea Veggies, Seaweed Salad, and Ocean Nutrition are ideal for this purpose. These fish are particularly effective in controlling algae in saltwater or reef aquariums.
