Midnight Puffer
Midnight Puffer (Arothron sp.)
The Midnight Puffer is one of over 100 pufferfish species worldwide. This striking fish stands out due to its dark black coloration, making it both rare and highly sought after. Like all pufferfish, it lacks pelvic fins and relies on its pectoral fins for swimming, creating a captivating display both in aquariums and while scuba diving.
The Midnight Puffer can inflate its body to more than twice its normal size as a defense mechanism, and its inflated form features protruding spines. Additionally, its flesh contains toxins, which serve as a potent deterrent to predators and other fish.
Often referred to simply as the Black Puffer, this species can grow to just over 12 inches in length. It possesses a sharp, beak-like mouth used for crushing prey. Its unique attributes make it a fascinating addition to a saltwater aquarium. A tank of at least 100 gallons is recommended.
