Panther Grouper
Panther Grouper (Cromileptes altivelis)
The Panther Grouper (Cromileptis altivelis), also known as the Polka Dot Grouper, Humpback Grouper, High Finned Grouper, or Barramundi Cod, is a large marine fish that can reach up to 28” in length. It features a distinctive humpbacked appearance with a slender vertical profile, a small head, and an elongated snout. Adults are cream-colored with black spots on their body and fins. The top of the fish is narrower than its base, with a concave profile at the head. Differentiating between males and females is challenging.
In the wild, Panther Groupers inhabit lagoons, seaward reefs, silty areas, and coral reefs. To replicate this environment in an aquarium, use a sandy substrate with pebbles and live rocks for hiding, and provide ample swimming space. A lid is essential to prevent escapes, as these fish can be shy when first introduced. Panther Groupers are carnivorous and will eat invertebrates and small fish. They can be aggressive if stressed or threatened.
Given their size, they require a large tank with efficient filtration and water flow. Their diet should include meaty foods such as krill, shrimp, and small fish. Breeding in captivity is challenging.
